How to Maintain Healthy Gums with Periodontology?

Maintaining oral health requires not only healthy teeth but also healthy gums, as gums are the tissues that surround your teeth and play a crucial role in overall oral health. Gum diseases are among the most common health issues worldwide and can lead to severe consequences. This is where periodontology comes in—a branch of dentistry dedicated to preventing and treating gum diseases and maintaining healthy gums.

What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry focused on the gums and surrounding supportive tissues. It involves studying and treating the soft tissues (gums) and bone structures around the teeth.

Periodontal diseases usually start with inflammation of the gums and, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Periodontology specializes in the early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gum diseases.

Why Do Gum Diseases Occur?

Gum diseases are primarily caused by poor oral hygiene. Plaque buildup can lead to gum inflammation. If not cleaned in time, this can develop into gum disease. Other contributing factors include genetics, smoking, poor nutrition, and stress. If untreated, gum diseases can result in tooth loss and have negative effects on overall health.

How Are Gum Diseases Treated With Periodontology?

The treatment of gum diseases varies according to the level of the disease. Periodontology specialists use various methods in this treatment process. The treatment process usually consists of the following steps:

  • Gum Cleaning: The first step is cleaning the gums. Plaque and tartar deposits between teeth are removed, allowing the gums to heal properly. This procedure is performed by the dentist using specialized cleaning techniques.
  • Deep Cleaning (Curettage): In cases of inflamed gums, deep cleaning may be necessary. Curettage removes plaque and tartar from the tooth roots, eliminating harmful deposits below the gums and speeding up the healing process.
  • Gum Surgery: In more advanced cases of periodontal disease, surgical intervention may be required. Gum surgery helps reshape the gums and remove inflamed tissues, as well as improve the bone structure around the teeth.
  • Dental Implants: Sometimes tooth loss occurs during periodontal treatment. In such cases, dental implants can be used. These are artificial tooth roots that replace missing teeth, playing a vital role in aesthetics and function.

Methods to Maintain Healthy Gums

While periodontal treatment is crucial in maintaining healthy gums, preventive measures should also be taken afterward. Important tips include:

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene: To keep your gums healthy, pay attention to oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, use dental floss, and don't forget to clean your tongue. Regular dental checkups help prevent plaque buildup.
  • Avoid Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of gum diseases by promoting bacterial growth and weakening gums, so it should be avoided.
  • Don’t Skip Regular Dental Checkups: To ensure your gums stay healthy, regular dental visits are essential. Your dentist will check your gums and help prevent diseases with early diagnosis. Professional cleaning sessions can also help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.

If you're experiencing any gum issues, consult a periodontology specialists for appropriate treatment. Remember, healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile!
