Habits That Damage Teeth

The health of the teeth directly affects the quality of life. In particular, the unhealthy teeth used while eating affect the general health. When the habits that harm the teeth are not abandoned, no matter how well the teeth are taken care of, damage to the teeth cannot be prevented.

WHAT ARE THE HABITS THAT DAMAGE THE TEETH?

  • Using a nursing bottle
  • Grinding teeth
  • Excessive consumption of sports drinks, acidic beverages or fruit juices
  • Opening bottle caps using teeth
  • Chewing sugary gum
  • Chewing a pencil
  • Drinking Coffee and smoking
  • Eating disorder
  • Eating sunflower seeds
  • Frequent snacking
  • Breaking things with teeth
  • Piercing lips, tongue and teeth
  • Brushing teeth incorrectly
  • Clenching teeth

Using a nursing bottle

Giving babies juice, milk or formula with a bottle at bedtime paves the way for dental caries. For this reason, if babies need to be given liquids before going to bed, they should be prevented from sleeping while the bottle is in their mouth.

Grinding teeth

The problem of teeth grinding, which is among the habits that damage the teeth, causes pain over time. Factors that cause teeth grinding are stress and sleep habits. Therefore, protective products should be used to protect the teeth at night.

Excessive consumption of sports drinks, acidic beverages or fruit juices

Sports drinks have the ability to give energy. Therefore, they contain a high amount of sugar. The same is true for fruit juices. These drinks cause an acid attack on the tooth enamel, causing the teeth to decay faster.

Opening bottle caps using teeth

Trying to open bottle caps or plastic packaging using the teeth is among the habits that damage the teeth. This habit can cause cracks in the teeth.

Chewing sugary gum

All sugary foods, especially when chewed for a long time, prepare the ground for tooth decay.

Chewing a pencil

When chewing pencils becomes a habit, it can cause serious damage to the teeth.

Drinking Coffee and smoking

Coffee consumption, which is among the habits that harm the teeth, causes discoloration and yellowing over time. Tobacco products such as cigarettes cause staining on the teeth and gum disease.

Eating disorder

An eating disorder or unhealthy diet has negative effects on dental health. Consuming too much sweets can cause tooth decay. In addition, vomiting due to eating disorders such as bulimia wears down the teeth and causes bad breath. Because vomit contains strong acids.

Eating sunflower seeds

While the sunflower seeds are consumed, the kernel residues can get stuck on the interfaces and damage the teeth and gums.

Frequent snacking

Frequent snacking is among the habits that harm teeth. The reason for this is that food residues cause bacterial plaque formation. At the same time, this situation accelerates the decay.

Breaking things with teeth

Hard-shelled foods such as hazelnuts and walnuts should not be broken with teeth. Because hard-shelled foods can crack, wear and even break teeth.

Piercing lips, tongue and teeth

Among the habits that damage the teeth, there is also piercing in the mouth area. Tongue piercing can cause scratches and damage when it comes into contact with the teeth. Also, tooth piercings can crack and break teeth. The rubbing of piercings on the gums also damages the gums.

Brushing teeth incorrectly

Teeth cleaning should be done at least twice a day. Too long brushing or brushing teeth too hard are among the habits that damage the teeth. This can cause tooth and gingival sensitivity and erosion of the cementum layer in the roots.
