What Causes Gingival Bleeding? How does it pass?

When you brush or floss your teeth, you may think that your gums are bleeding due to being rough. However, it may not be the only reason for the pressure you apply. Because gingival bleeding is an indication that there is a problem in your gums and oral health.

What is Gingival Bleeding?

Gingival bleeding is a common condition. However, it should not be neglected. Because although the problem in question is often caused by gingivitis, bleeding that does not go away for a long time and often recurs can be a symptom of different chronic diseases.

What Are the Symptoms of Gingival Bleeding?

Gingival bleeding is the most common form of blood during tooth brushing. In addition, some sensitivity problems may occur.

  • Pain in the gums when consuming hot and cold drinks
  • Feeling pressure on the gums while chewing food
  • One of the main symptoms is that the gums are redder than their normal color and accordingly swelling.

What Causes Gingival Bleeding?

The main cause of bleeding is the deterioration in the structure of the gingiva. The main conditions that cause deterioration in the gingival structure and therefore gingival bleeding are as follows:

  • Gingivitis or Periodontitis: It is the inflammation of the gum tissue or the ligaments in the area where the gum and tooth tissues meet. This condition, which causes damage to the gingival tissues, ranks first among the causes of gingival bleeding.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Disruption or improper application of oral and dental care causes deterioration of the structure of the gums.
  • Trauma: Consuming crusty and hard foods or exposing the tissues in the mouth to physical trauma can cause gingival bleeding.
  • Intraoral Prosthesis: Gums may be damaged during the use of dentures or oral prostheses that do not fit the oral structure.
  • Pregnancy: With the hormonal changes during pregnancy, the gums become more prone to bleeding.
  • Chronic Diseases: In the course of chronic diseases such as diabetes, liver and kidney diseases, in which the gum tissues become susceptible to damage, gingival bleeding can be encountered.
  • Smoking: Cigarettes damage the structure of the gums with the effect of the chemicals it contains, making the gums more prone to bleeding. Therefore, smoking should be stopped for both oral health and general health.

Suggestions

The problem of gingival bleeding can be prevented with various applications and measures that can be taken. The suggestions you can apply are as follows:

  • If there is edema in the gums, gargling with salt water can be effective to relieve this edema and prevent bleeding.
  • The most common cause of bleeding gums is poor oral hygiene. For this reason, it is very important to perform oral and dental care correctly and regularly. In this direction, it is recommended to brush the teeth at least twice a day, with the right technique and the right equipment, and to use dental floss and mouthwash solutions.
  • It is extremely important to gain a balanced and adequate nutrition habit. Hard, crusty or hot foods that may cause damage to teeth and gums should not be consumed. At the same time, attention should be paid to a diet rich in substances such as calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and vitamin C, which are necessary for oral and dental health.
  • Harmful habits such as smoking and alcohol consumption should be stopped.
  • Annual dental check-ups should not be interrupted in order to prevent gingival bleeding problem.
  • In case of incompatibility of dentures or dentures, a dentist should be consulted.
